One of the giants of Australian jazz and a recipient of the Graeme Bell Career Achievment Award, pianist-composer Mike Nock has enjoyed a remarkable career, beginning in his native New Zealand, then on to Australia in the early 1960s, and a productive 25 years in the USA, where he played with everyone from Coleman Hawkins to Art Blakey. Since returning to Australia in 1985, Mike has been an important performer and educator. He continues to engage with younger musicians, challenging and inspiring them to excel. His latest band is the Mike Nock New Quintet, featuring Phil Slater (trumpet), Karl Laskowski (tenor saxophone), Ben Waples (bass) and James Waples (drums).
